The 'Karlsruhe model'
Karlsruhe, Germany

Things to see:

Combined regional and urban transport system.

Tram traffic extended into the region.

Modern two system vehicles using both tram tracks and German rail tracks.

Integration of light rail system into the central city

Site Description   The Karlsruhe model gained international renown for being a forerunner for combined regional and urban transport making use of modern two system light rail vehicles.
The model is a cost efficient yet very effective approach and an example for how regional and urban transport may be combined and integrated into the city scape.
Instead of introducing a new and costly rapid transportation system, the existing tram system in Karlruhe was modernised and extended by making use of German Rail tracks. The project also included the introduction of exclusive right of way (today 80%), priorisation for trams at most crossings and the use of vehicles cabable of handling the 750 Volts DC tram environment as well as in the German rail 15.000 Volts AC system.
Today the Karlsruhe light rail provides service in a network of 400 km and stretches far out into the region even connecting the city of Heilbronn in the neighbouring Neckar region.
Applications of the model can be found in Bremen and Chemnitz.
