Car-free living.

Successful integration of the quarter into public transport.

Ecologically oriented urban design, low energy housing.

Vauban

The Vauban quarter was developed on a site of 38 ha which was formerly occupied by french barracks. Major guidelines for the urban planning were:
To create a mixed use area which offers work space close to housing areas.
To prioritise the 'green' transport modes (pedestrians, bicyclists and public transport.
Preserve the existing green as far as possible.
To built a socially mixed community.
Local heat supply and low energy housing types.
According to these guidelines the Vauban quarter is a 'car free' area were parking is only possible at the borders in shared 'quarter garages'. Moreover the Freiburg tram is going to be extended to connect Vauban with the rest of the city.
